Start the day right!

An insight into how to best start your day to make sure your body has exactly what it needs.

After an entire night of not drinking, your body wakes up thirsty. Whilst you are in dreamland  you also lose salt and minerals, so come the morning those need to be replenished too. The best thing you can do is restrain from that cup of coffee and quench that thirst first.

The most efficient way to do this is by adding some magic ingredients to your water.

Prepare a pint of water with ¼ of a teaspoon of good quality sea salt and some fresh lemon or lime juice (add as much as you like, even a little goes a long way. If you add a lot you can drink through a straw to protect teeth enamel).  If ¼ of a teaspoon of salt tastes too weird for you start smaller and work up to it. The aim of the game is to have a gentler start of the day. You can prepare the water with salt the night before so it has completely dissolved by the morning and just add fresh lemon or lime juice before drinking it).

Drink this magic potion as soon as you wake up (you could do this whilst standing outside to help reset your circadian rhythm… more on this in the next post).

Make sure you do not eat for the 15/20 min after finishing your pint of water. This can be the perfect time to shower and get ready, by the point that is done you can eat your breakfast.

This combo means that your morning water now contains electrolytes, giving you an excellent form of hydration after your long sleep. Natural unrefined sea salt (like celtic salt or pink himalayan salt) is a great source of minerals and trace minerals. Starting the morning hydrated and with sodium in your body will help you fight fatigue and muscle cramps.

The vitamin C in the juice helps strengthen your immune system, it helps to make glutathione (needed for detoxification in the liver, healthy immune function and antioxidant). Its alkalising effect helps with detoxification processes and the salt mixed with the lime/lemon helps pull out toxins from your cells. Win win.

The sodium also helps your adrenals function properly. If your adrenals are happy it will help with your metabolism, energy levels, blood pressure, heart rate and much more.

The lemon or lime also improves acidity levels in your stomach and stimulates the release of bile, so the breakfast you will have afterwards will be digested much better.

In this way instead of hitting your thirsty body with lots of caffeine first thing, you give your body what it needs and in return you will start to see a shift in energy levels and less brain fog.

If you want to upgrade this ritual:

  • Use filtered water: free of chlorine, limescale and aluminium.

  • Work yourself up to drinking 1 litre of water instead of a pint (this may take some time)
